What do you need to know about using Voi in the UK if you’re 16 or 17 years old?

Aug 19, 2024

In some of our UK locations you can ride a Voi e-scooter if you are 16 or 17 years old. Currently these locations are London, Southampton, Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Isle of Wight. The age limit for riding our e-bikes anywhere in the UK is 16 years old and over.

Signing up to Voi is easy, just download the Voi app and follow the instructions. You’ll need a provisional driving licence to ride our e-scooters. You can find out how to ride an e-scooter here  and how to ride an e-bike here.

We want to make sure that you ride safely and you’re aware of the rules of the road.

When you sign up to Voi, you’ll do a safety quiz before you can take your first ride. We've also got some great safety training online - and you get free rides if you complete it. We advise you to take the training. It tells you how to ride our e-bikes and e-scooters, with information about where you can ride - not on the pavement! - and how to park. It also has lots of useful information about the rules of the road so you’ll be confident about how to approach crossroads, roundabouts and other junctions as well as sharing the road with motorists.

You can do our Ride Safe Academy whenever it suits you at any time of day or night. We also have free monthly online webinars, you can sign up for them here. We’ll give you 30-minutes of free rides if you complete either of the courses. You could get an hour’s worth of free rides if you do both - and you’ll be a much safer rider too!

Our safe riding top tips

There are some basic rules you should always follow when riding with us:

  • Only one person per scooter or bike.

  • Never ride on the pavement. You should ride on the road, cycle paths or shared use cycle/footpaths.

  • Park considerately - don’t block the pavement, crossings or driveways.

  • Think about others when you’re riding or parking. Blind people or people with sight loss might not be able to see you so watch out for them and don’t park where they might trip over your bike or scooter.

  • Every vehicle has a bell next to the left handlebar grip, twist it to ring it and alert people that you’re coming.

  • Always stop at red lights and zebra crossings.

  • We advise you to wear a helmet and good visibility clothing.

  • Keep both hands on the handlebars - don’t ride with your phone in your hand.

  • Don’t share your account with anyone, especially someone who is underage. You could be banned from Voi if you do this and even face police prosecution and get points on your driving licence.

How much does it cost?

When you open the Voi app you’ll see details of prices including different passes you can get, depending how frequently you ride. We have a discount scheme for students called Voi 4 Students. You can find out about other ways to save money on rides in this blog
